In her installations, Janina Totzauer combines video, ceramics, and textiles to create new forms of life and fantasies. Her artistic practice is marked by her intensive research into nature as a disseminator of knowledge and her long-standing involvement with the customs and traditions of different cultures, such as those of her former adopted countries, Mozambique and South Africa.
She examines how humans treat animals and plants, using this exploration to metaphorically expose how they interact with one another. Her work dissects human constructs such as patriarchy, imperialism, and racism, while creating a vision for a possible alternative future.
Totzauer's sculptural and audiovisual works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Cinema Galleggiante film festival in Venice, the Goethe Institutes in Mozambique and Mexico, the City Museum in Gwangju, South Korea, and the Project Room in Windhoek, Namibia. In 2018, she co-founded the AlmResidency, an annual artist residency located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps.
