When we dream, there are the clear, realistic dreams in which fantasy and mystery have little place. But there are also those that we remember but the meaning of which is not immediately revealed. Some parts of the dream may be clear, others hidden under mysterious layers; some elements are so vivid that they appear to the reawakened person as a concentrate of several feelings and premonitions.
Johannes Felder's paintings often have a similar effect. They impress at first glance with their powerful colours and the bold application. They are often reminiscent of landscapes that were remembered with particular intensity. It is as if Felder had recalled a landscape that he had experienced with all his senses and translated all its elements – its smells, its character, its sound – into something visual. Over time, the eye is drawn to details of which one can never be sure whether they are the result of a skilful composition or the chance product of a wild painterly gesture.
This deliberate uncertainty allows for very individual experiences and interpretations, as Felder intentionally leaves room for the viewer's interpretation.
