Joram von Below has defined a clear framework for his painting. His tools consist of colour, surface and the horizontal. Above a narrow base that runs flush with the lower edge of the picture, monochrome surfaces unfold, occasionally further staggered by parallel colour gradients.
The predominant use of blue tones constantly evokes the landscape association of a low horizon. Von Below does not refer to any reality outside the picture; he refrains from individual gestures and nameable dramas beyond the visible neighbourhood squabbles of subtle colour nuances.
Through constant self-restraint and formal reduction, he aims for tranquil realms, open fields, purified surfaces, from which to escape a flooded reality. As if the narrow, horizontal entrance offered the possibility of an overview of and a leap into the undefined, the artist consistently circles around the creation of open-ended landscapes of thought.
