Maria Berauer

Maria Berauer's artistic work includes performances, videos, installations, sound art and interventions in the public space. The common element in her artistic practice is the (own) body as a tool, material, source of information, and means of expression. Based on questions about the fundamental parameters of the human condition, Berauer explores the diversity of human existence and behavior, using the body as a means of access to the world. Influenced by dance, the artist focuses on the immediate presence and unique sensuality of corporality and movement, enhanced through linguistic and sonic expressions, as well as costumes, objects, and spaces. The body becomes a venue for acts and performances at the intersection of aesthetic, psycho-social, political, and ethical issues.

Her studies in Media Art and Art Education at the Academy of fine Arts, Munich, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), and the Faculdad de Bellas Artes Universidad Granada (Spain), as well as her in-depth study of flamenco dance, have influenced and enriched her artistic practice.

Berauer has participated in numerous exhibitions, festivals, residencies and projects in Europe and the USA, among others at the Salzamt Linz, Le Pad Angers, Villa Waldberta Munich, Galerija Remont Belgrade, the Design Museum Gent and the ‘Dance’ Festival Munich. She has received project and studio scholarships from the Cultural Department of the City of Munich and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. She is currently a studio scholarship holder of the Erwin and Gisela von Steiner Foundation. In 2015, together with Karo Knote and Kat Petroschkat, she founded the performance collective The Hercules and Leo Case, which performs internationally.

In 2025, Maria Berauer will present her work at the Kunstpavillon Munich in the Old Botanical Garden as part of ‘Performative Positions’.
