Partner: Schloss Plüschow, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, DE

Franziska Hesse was born in 1979 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and initially grew up in Schwerin, DE, later in Plau am See, DE. After graduating from high school, she left the North of Germany and studied painting and graphics at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden in Dresden. In 2011, she returned to Mecklenburg, where she locates the roots of her work and motivation. She lives here with chickens and quails, a large garden and an unobstructed view of forests and meadows. The rural aspects in their structural, village-like and natural facets form the foundation of her images, which now almost exclusively rely on pencil and graphite.

Regarding her work, the artist says: “The process that each piece undergoes is spontaneous and unpredictable. It remains vulnerable and fragile in a productive, open-ended sense. Yet, there is a strong inner path along which it unfolds. Archetypes, shapes, and structures seem anchored here, working outward. My work begins with an impulse. During the drawing process, it calms down, rises again, and then calms down again. All of this remains visible, and in the best case, perceptible.”
