Willi Otremba was born in Bochum, Germany. During his school years, he first encountered contemporary art at the Kunstmuseum Bochum and the Museum Folkwang in Essen. After training as a color lithographer, he studied communication design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund and increasingly focused on his painterly work in the field of concrete art.
"The true subject of painting is color itself. Only in painting is color real."
Colors, with their appearances and effects, inherently defy a concrete understanding. In their interplay, they remain ever-changing to perception—they either adapt or assert stubbornly their own character. Otremba’s intention is to make the interaction of various color fields perceptible as a vibrant color composition.
During his residency at the International Künstlerhaus of the Kebbel Villa, he plans to focus on his concept of color painting through the technique of watercolor and to use this time for intensive contemplative practice. Watercolor, after all, can never be fully mastered or calculated—it retains a will of its own beyond the control of craftsmanship, constantly revealing new surprises down to the smallest detail.
