The world is a blueberry.
„To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.“
— William Blake, Auguries of Innocence
For me, this contains a fundamental insight: everything is interconnected. The universe, with its billions of light-years, and a blueberry lying in the palm of one’s hand. The immeasurable vastness of the cosmos and the smallest form of life. The archaic and the contemporary. The transient and the timeless.
I was born in Estonia. My artistic language is shaped by the traditional patterns of my homeland, my personal memories, reflections on its history, and the experiences of the period of transition and the Estonian ‘Singing Revolution’. This time of upheaval not only brought about political and social changes, but also raised questions of identity, freedom, origin and cultural memory. These form a personal resonance within my work.
To me, Estonian patterns are more than just traditional ornaments and images. They are traces of a body of knowledge that has developed over generations – an expression of a deep connection to nature, tradition and the melting pot of different cultures, desires, traumas, and shifting interpretations of history and within history. In my work, they become symbols that link the past and the future, personal memory and universal cultural experience.
For me, the blueberry symbolises the whole in miniature. It is fruit, colour, flavour, nature – temptation, sin, history and a warning all at once. It points to connections that extend far beyond its visible form.
My art is a quest for these connections. It invites us to step outside our usual frames of reference and view the world through different eyes. Perhaps the infinite does not begin in the distance, but precisely where we are prepared to truly perceive the small.
