Anzhelika Palyvoda: Crossroad and Arch (Artist Talk)

In her artist talk, our artist-in-residence Anzhelika Palyvoda reflects on her artistic practice shaped between Kyiv and Vienna. Working across painting, sculpture, installation and sound, she explores memory, migration, war, distance and the ways personal experiences can be carried forward.

The title Crossroad and Arch refers to two recurring conditions in her practice: moments of choosing a direction and creating connections between different places, experiences and people.

In projects such as Aperta Hortus (2023–ongoing), Palyvoda transforms archival images, voices, objects and spatial forms into new contexts. Her installations invite viewers not simply to observe, but to become part of the work. Different media address different levels of perception, allowing individual memories to meet and gradually form a shared, collective memory.

She will also speak about her involvement in Vienna’s independent art scene and the artist-run space arka arka.

Anzhelika Palyvoda (b. 2000, Kyiv, Ukraine) is a Vienna-based artist working across painting, installation and sound. Her practice explores memory as a fragmented and evolving structure, investigating how personal and collective histories become embedded within materials, spaces and everyday gestures. Moving between intimate narratives and broader historical realities, she works in-between fundamental human experiences: joy and grief, care and loss, remembering and forgetting. Born in Kyiv, Palyvoda studied Monumental and Easel Painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv) before continuing her studies at the University of Applied Arts (Vienna), where her practice expanded into installation and spatial practice. Alongside her artistic work, she curates artist-run space arka arka, reflecting her ongoing interest in collaborative exhibition-making and dialogue between artists from diverse cultural contexts.
