Moritz Dometshauser

Moritz Dometshauser, born in 1985 in Nuremberg (DE), lives and works as a visual artist in Munich (DE). He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, as well as at the Edinburgh College of Art (UK) and Goldsmiths, University of London (UK).

His artistic practice is rooted in painting and explores perception within the context of digital image cultures. His work begins with an examination of technically generated, compressed and fragmented images that increasingly shape our notions of reality. In his works, he translates damaged or incomplete image data into painting, thereby exploring processes of loss, change and transformation.

The paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction, combining digital references such as glitches, renderings and 3D models with material painterly processes. Painting is understood here as a physical and temporal medium that reflects the aesthetic and social conditions of our present, which is shaped by digital images.

His works have been exhibited at venues including the Museum of Modern Art in Passau, as well as in Munich and Budapest. He has received several grants and awards, including the residency grant from the Budapest Gallery, the project grant from the Kunstfonds Foundation, and the ‘Young Art and New Paths’ grant from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. His works are held in institutional collections, including the Kiscell Museum in Budapest, the Bamberg Historical Museum and the Südhausbau Collection in Munich.
